I suspect it's a bit more complicated than tat, because you can have 
at least the following:

1x128kbps DD
3x4.8kbps DV

Going on at the same time, as well as updates and other stuff, and I 
haven't worked out the IP and encapsulation overheads yet either.

The one about "dedicated connection" sounds more like a safeguard, 
but you certainly wouldn't want the gateway on the same link as a 
heavy Bittorrent user. :)
