Gday,
Ive been using D-Star on the simplex channel over the past few day and have
been amazed at the range I can obtain from my QTH.
I live in Kyneton down near the river, its probably one of the lower spots
in the area and not that good for VHF / UHF comms with FM. The surrounding
area is generally 10 to 30 mtrs higher than my place.
The station consists of an IC-2820H using antenna diversity. The two
antennas are a Diamond X-200 at 6mtrs and a Diamond X-400 (used as the Tx
antenna) at 10mtrs.
With this installation I constantly receive on simplex the following D-Star
station located in Melbournes eastern suburbs.
VK3CSJ, VK3MY, VK3NM, VK3NAV, VK3SOX, VK3GV
Most of these stations are over 100km away as the crow flies and the signals
have to go over the Great Divide mountain range.
Before I set the station up I though I would not have anyone to talk to.
On Friday I was mobile just north of Malmsbury with the IC-2820 sitting on
the front seat of the car when I had a D-Star call from VK3TQ also mobile in
Melbournes east. It was surprising to work another mobile station over
110km away especially when I was running only mag mount ½ wave on the roof.
If we can get similar performance out of our D-Star repeaters when they are
installed it will be fantastic.
Cheers
Richard
