Well, remember that the D-STAR radios are capable of FM as well, so 
they are fully backwards compatible, and (I can speak for the IC-91AD 
here, as I own one) they are full featured radios as well, so you're 
not compromising anything.

The question that remains is whether you'll make use of the D-STAR 
facilities or not.  If the answer is "yes" or "maybe", and you have 
the money, it's a no brainer, go for the D-STAR.  If you're anywhere 
near Melbourne or within the coverage of either the Mt Dandenong or 
Mt Macedon repeaters (these are the sites for the new D-STAR 
repeaters), then you should seriously consider D-STAR.  Otherwise 
it's your call.

Keep in mind, it's not an either-or argument, it's simply a matter of 
how you want to spend your money.
