[Dstar] Question about Reflectors

It would be good to have audible confirmation that DPLUS has actually
done what you asked, eg. announce that you have linked to VK4RGC port A
when you have VK4RGCAL in the Your Call setting of your radio. At the
moment, you know that a remote system is linked when someone sets up a
DPLUS link, this is good for the person that initiated the link, but
others listening on that repeater port have no idea what just happened
other than they are now linked to somewhere "out there"..
My idea on the user initiated query, Your Call set to "_______Q", would
be to help users to find the status of the DPLUS system and where it is
linked _before_ they start talking. It's easy for me, as I'm the only
one who has DPLUS linking privileges here in Port Lincoln, but as the
other guys here get up to speed with D-Star and DPLUS then I would like
to be able to let them loose and have some fun.
Extending the analogy to another internet radio linking system, IRLP.
Imagine how confusing it could be if you had no other confirmation when
you link to another IRLP node other than an audible "remote system
linked"? What if you mis-dialed, this conveys no useful information to
others listening on the frequency. When you hear that recorded voice
announcement letting you know you have been successfully linked to the
IRLP node you dialed, it is useful for both you and others listening as
well. Knowledge is power!
Michael.
