  Hi Nigel,
I tend to agree, I picked up an ID800H back in August/October last year, I'm not particularly active but I have been monitoring and it would seem to me that beaconing could become an issue, as an example when I started on APRS, UI-View, I thought Beaconing every 15 minutes or so was somewhat a novel thing to do apart from the Weather Station data that I was transmitting every 15 minutes, it soon became apparent that with more and more stations beaconing away the frequency channel would become clogged up so to speak and in fact I was asked to reduce the beaconing. Although D-Star is a different mode of operation here I tend to think that beaconing for the sake of Beaconing is probably unnecessary, unless you are in the shack or at home where it would be more a meaningful thing to do, or am over looking something....

  Regards

I would like to raise Beaconing as a topic for discussion.

Most of us, who have this built-in feature, have played with beaconing at some point. But I do wonder if there is really a sound reason for base stations to beacon on a continual basis?

With my observation over the past few weeks it's apparent that some base stations are beaconing 24hrs a day. Another observation is when mobile and beaconing, their base station is also beaconing.

With DV activity growing here in Melbourne beaconing has become more prevalent and in time may become more of a hindrance to those listening or on air having a QSO. In fact I would concede this is already a concern. Apart from the continual beaconing one has to listen to while in their shack, these beacons are also T/X'g between two stations having a QSO and up to three or four beacons at a time. With the gateway in use on some of these QSO's I do wonder on the affect these beacons are having on the four second gap requirement? But it does hinder others when attempting to break-in to a QSO.

These are just some examples. But I do feel is enough to warrant a discussion on beaconing control before it becomes a bigger issue.
