Hello,
The threat from Hurricane Gustav has passed. The hurricane subsided to
Category 2 as it reached the Gulf Coast. New Orleans levees held, just
barely. Even so, Gustav did a lot of damage in other areas along the Coast
and Islands. There are still many evacuees who are in shelters at this time,
and power and communications have not been completely restored in the
affected areas today. By Wednesday night / Thursday, it is likely that many
of the evacuees will be returning home.
The VoIP Hurricane Net has been deactivated to an Informal Status, as Gustav
is now a tropical storm. Though informal reports from Hurricane Hanna over
the Bahamas are welcome. Tropical Storm Ike has formed over the open
Atlantic but is no threat to any land area until this weekend.

>From Rob-KD1CY. Director of Operations for the VoIP Hurricane Net
"Concerning Gustav, the VoIP Hurricane Net Management Team would like to
extend a HUGE thank you to all of the reporting stations in the affected
area who relayed vital weather and damage information to our net. It was a
tremendous effort and led to a very active and informal net. We'd also like
to thank the out of area stations that had contact in the affected area that
relayed reports to our net as well. The more information we can get from
other Hams we know in the affected area as well as family and friends paints
a high situational awareness and allows for the information to be used as
vital "disaster intelligence". God speed and prayers for the recovery
efforts that will be ongoing for Gustav. Thanks to all for their continued
support of the VoIP Hurricane Net!"
Cheers
Richard
