The big point is that DV mode allows simultaneous voice and data in
the one radio. Sure, it could be a bit "smarter", like have error
correction, and dynamically fill the voice part of the data stream
with more data when there's no voice, but it is a step up from having
to run two radios in some applications.

Well, that combination of power and speed isn't available in the
amateur world here (High speed packet in Slovenia is one exception
where amateurs have high speed data).
