Hello to the good dstar folks in Australia,
epinnell2002 at yahoo.com Eric Pinnell, K5EJP from Texas is visiting
Melbourne on business for a month or so. Please make him welcome.
This is a cross post from an email he sent to the Austin, Texas ham group.
I'm wondering if anyone has a good idea for a makeshift antenna that
will work in a hotel room on 2m and 70cm?
The backstory is I am in an a "corporate apartment" (meaning it's a
temporary apartment) for the next couple of months with only HTs. I am
in the city (Melbourne, Australia) and need to get about 15 miles to hit
both the normal repeaters and the D-STAR repeater. I already have a
Mirage amp that should get my power up to 35-45 watts (which should be
enough power), but for that setup to work, I'll need an antenna and
tuner. I can open a window and maybe run a wire to the next building,
but that's about it. Access to the roof... forget it. I can't get out as
it is, it seems I can't make the distance and there is a ton of
interference since it's smack dab in the middle of the city.
There is a good ham shop in Melbourne (strictlyhams) where I can get the
stuff, but I might have to have Ross order something for me. I will be
back in Austin for a brief time as well so I can pick up something OTC
there (if it's not too big 'cause I'd have to bring it back on the plane
with me).
Any ideas?
73,
-e
