I generally use J-Poles for quick and dirty antennas.  Made out of TV 
ribbon, they are portable, and work well.  Easy to hang from the curtain rail.

The key in Melbourne is the direction the room is facing.  Generally, 
east facing rooms do better, as most of the repeaters are east of the 
city.  Height also helps.  Interference will be a problem.  My 
IC-91AD doesn't handle the interference well.  Use the attenuator, 
that will help a lot.
