I hope you got VirtualBox working.
VirtualBox is an application that provides virtualisation, where an
operating system can be hosted as a guest on another operating system.
Instead of needing one computer for each operating system you need to
use, or trying to do all your work on one operating system, you are
freed to use whatever operating systems you need at the time.

In general, RAM available to a guest is taken from your host operating
system, and so running multiple guests at once slows things down, and
guests often run faster if you close applications on the host first.

Hmm. While you certainly need to have a working knowledge of computer
based electronics, it's not IT as such. IT is a much wider field. You
can ignore most of the field, and concentrate on just how a typical
computer works ... as far as it is used for programming other equipment
like radios.
Putting it slightly another way ... radios are becoming *very* complex,
with embedded controllers doing more than they used to. That complexity
demands a complex control panel ... which can't fit on the radio itself,
because it costs far too much to add all the controls.
So using a software based control panel for the less common functions is
a win ... it makes the product more effective for a lower price.
