G'day Jon,

Yes, you will need the 92AD software. An Icom dealer should be able to send you the software either via email or CD.

Cheers,

    Hello David,
Thanks for the info, but as a new user a few days old I could not know
of events in the past. I only found this group by accident (goggle
search). Also I suggest your last sentence is not quite correct as ICOM
(commercial) has plenty to gain from hardware sales. Thanks again

    Mike,

    In answer to your question:
Richard Hoskin advised, via this group, that the Gateway server had been
repaired on 24 Feb and that it he hoped it would be returned to the site
in the next few weeks. He had set it up at a temporary location to
    allow people to re-register.

He then advised on 2 March that it had been taken offline, from its
temporary location, in preparation for relocation back to the repeater
    site in the near future.

The Gateway had suffered a major problem originally requiring a complete
rebuild. Since Richard's email on 24 Feb there has been a
teleconference with a number of D-STAR Gateway administrators from
around Australia and work has been undertaken by several people to
develop and test backup and recovery scripts. This has been designed to
minimise the impact if this unfortunate event occurs again. All of this
takes time. In most circumstances each visit to a repeater site takes
at least 1/2 day, so it makes more sense to plan and prepare properly,
than to rush a service back into operation which will probably require
further visits. Please remember that this is a hobby and people do
things when they can, unless of course you would like to start paying
commercial rates for a commercial grade of service.

    Regards,

    David Tilson, VK3UR

Ah yes, you might buy an Icom D-Star rig for X number of dollars, but
you do not otherwise pay for a radio communication service (apart from
your licence fee and possibly WIA membership) that allows you to talk
around the world with like minded people.
If you wanted a commercial two-way radio service with this capability
you would have a multi-million dollar bill and then the ongoing costs on
top of that... or you could just pick up a phone.
You gotta remember that this is amateur radio... VHF and UHF repeaters,
IRLP nodes, APRS Igates, Echolink nodes are generally funded and
maintained by individuals or small groups, they take time and money to
    maintain.
If you aren't happy with the way the VK3RWN gateway server crash
recovery has progressed this last month, I'm sure Richard would love to
have other people willing to lend a hand, learn the ins and outs of a
D-Star gateway and donate their time when things go wrong.
I personally maintain a 2m repeater, a 70cm repeater, an IRLP node, an
APRS Igate, two APRS digipeaters, a 70cm D-Star repeater and all the
hardware needed to make these all things operate, plus I work 60+ hours
    a week at my job.
These services are all here in the Port Lincoln area, free for any
visiting amateur radio operator to use at any time... but if they start
to complain because the IRLP node is down and I take a few days to fix
it... then they will gently be shown the door, this is my hobby, not my
    life.
    Sorry for the rant...
    Michael.

    James,

I'll break this reply up into a few sections to try to answer your
    question.

To talk locally through your local D-STAR repeater you do not have to be
registered on the D-STAR G2 network. Even if you place the local
Gateway callsign (eg: VK2RDS G (South Sydney)) in RPT2 you will not be
heard outside of the local D-STAR repeater, except by users of DV
Dongles. However any DPRS (GPS) information will be picked up by the
dPLUS application (if it is running on the local Gateway computer) and
transfer positional information across to the APRS-IS.

Technically you can be registered on any D-STAR G2 Gateway around the
world, however the common and generally accepted international practice
is to be registered through your local Gateway, which allows details to
be locally validated. Once registered your callsign will be propagated
(over a few hours) to all of the other D-STAR G2 Gateways, around the
world and you will be able to access any system through any
appropriately configured G2 Gateway and people will be able to find you.
Which-ever Gateway you register on, will be the one that you need to
perform any of your account management in the future. This could be
problematic if, for some reason, the Gateway system you originally
registered on is removed from service.

So, hopefully, to put an answer in context of your question... During an
    emergency:
You don't need to be registered to use a local D-STAR repeater to talk
with local stations; however if you need access to the rest of the
national / international D-STAR network, or its features (Reflectors,
etc), you will need to be registered on a G2 Gateway somewhere.

An example of this could be where the portable D-STAR repeater, VK3RWW
B, is deployed to provide temporary coverage to an affected area. The
portable repeater can be connected, through its G2 Gateway computer, to
the rest of the D-STAR network via either an existing broadband internet
connection, or via its internal 3G wireless modem (provided it is
available). Once the internet connection has been established the G2
Gateway computer will propagate its details to the rest of the G2
network and (hopefully) within approx 2 - 4 hours it will know how to
route to the rest of the D-STAR network and the rest of the D-STAR
network will know how to route calls to VK3RWW B. This has been shown
to be quite successful at a number of Hamfests / Field days, etc over
the last 12 months, but to the best of my knowledge, hasn't yet been
used during any emergency response. In this instance new registrations
could be processed locally, to provide immediate temporary access to the
    rest of the network.

I hope this answers your question.

    Cheers,

    Davidt, VK3UR

Thanks David, that's a comprehensive reply that answers my questions
well. In summary, registration is a gating factor for routing between
repeaters ... or to put it another way, registration permits emission of
RF on a non-local repeater. The latter being the regulatory framework
    impinging on the design.
