Hi Peter,

D-star is I good thing and I don't mean to hurt anyone personally, the frustration just ate into me like sulphuric acid. I feel better now I have said something, very pleased we still have free speach and hope the system gets finished to the needs of the radio users. It is only a hobby on one side however has also required an investment.

Thanks for your input. Everyones even although some hostile is important.

Thanks Horst and James,

You have saved me a lot of money, time and grief. I was working toward
adding Dstar to my analogue site, but as it is 450Km away from my QTH and I
only get to visit it a couple of times a year, I'll shelve those plans.
Whilst the hardware costs wouldn't worry me too much, and I certainly was
looking forward to learning more about this new mode, there is little chance
of me being able to meet the expectations of those that expect instant
maintenance when things go belly up. And I certainly wouldn't want to create
undue stress to those whose life goes on hold when their hobby is suddenly
slid from beneath them by selfish people that put family, life and work
ahead of the need to drop everything and fix the box that has caused their
world to come to an end.

Heck, I better hang my head in shame as the 2m analogue has had a faulty RX
preamp for about 10 months now and I won't be fixing it until next month. I
will stand on the top roundabout in Portland next month and await the
flogging I richly deserve for this.

Seriously though, I don't care too much about the commercial agreement
between Icom and WIA for the donation of the repeaters. Icom's aim was to
sell Dstar radios to those that wanted to use the repeaters. If the delays
have concerned Icom, then that is a matter for them to take up with the WIA.
>From what I see, Icom are selling plenty of Dstar radios (Certainly more
than any other manufacturer. HiHi) and there is a lot of people achieving
the aim of amateur radio, learning through experimentation and collective
participation in a common interest. Sure those clubs that put their hands up
to host a Dstar system have probably bitten off more than they could chew,
but I am sure there chewing like hell and will get through it in the end.
You won't get anywhere taking a nibble and spitting it out in case you get a
belly ache.

This is my first posting to the list, although I have sandbagged on it for a
long time, and I mean no ill will toward anyone, I just want to thank Horst
and James for saving me and thank all those that are willing to take the
risk of disappointing a few so that so many can smile.

Well, I have certainly ruffled a few feathers with my simple question.
Incidentally, perhaps I missed it through all that QRM, but I didn't
actually see an answer.
The people involved seem to be more interested in telling about their
herculean efforts to get/keep the system going than just answering a simple
question.
I know for a fact that the 23cm system which supposedly would be the
mainstay for the Sydney area has never had an antenna plugged in after
nearly a year. As for cavities which may be hard to obtain (I doubt that),
the DD module does not actually need one.
By the way, one thing I can not be accused of is never lifting a finger to
make things happen.
That's all I will say.

Regards
Horst, VK2HL
