[Dstar] VK2RDS DD Mode

Hi,
Have been trying to connect to VK2RDS in DD mode unsucessfully.
I can see it transmitting a beacon occasionally, but cannot connect at all.
Does anyone know how to configure the ID-1 radio correctly?
I have my IP address configured (10.x.x.x) and the subnet mask at 255.0.0.0,
the gateway I have set is 10.0.0.1...
is this correct?
Is the repeater configured as gateway or server?
Apart from being able to ping it for starters, what should one see once
connected?
