found that DV will generally out perform FM by between 6db to 9db depending on the

between a mobile and portable station. I was mobile in Malmsbury on the north side
of the divide. Peter was portable with a beam on the roof of the car in Frankston.
The distance was over 125Kms and we were both using IC-2820s on 2mtrs. We
switch from DV to FM and lost contact. Switching back to DV we able to talk to
each other again.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

north of the divide. I can work VK3RWN 2mtrs most of the time using my IC92 HH hooked
up to the diamond external antenna. I don’t always have the same success
with VK3REC which is running on the same antenna system. (From memory <st1:City
w:st="on">D-Star</st1:City> <st1:State w:st="on">TX</st1:State> has about 12W
into the antenna and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">FM</st1:City> <st1:State
w:st="on">TX</st1:State></st1:place> has about 22W into the antenna)<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

observed in the commercial world. Companies using systems such as IDAS (Icoms commercial
digital system) have observed 15% to 25% better performance over the equivalent

possible that D-STAR repeaters have better range. My experience with D-STAR
simplex matches this - when analogue (FM) was used over a difficult signal
path, comms were unusable between a mate and myself - yet when we went to
